Mike Rowe Mission Statment

His show Dirty Jobs begins with the following intro: “My name is Mike Rowe and this is my job. I explore the country looking for people who aren’t afraid to get dirty. Hard working men and women who earn an honest living doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us. Now get ready to get dirty.”

This is probably the best mission and branding statement on television today. Why? In that brief intro, we learned the answer to these three questions:

Who am I?

Why do I do it?

Why does it matter?

These are questions everyone should be able to answer if they want to market themselves to the world at large. Why? Because as a TV host, you aren’t just a talking head with a personality, you’re a representative of yourself and whomever you’re working for. Even if you’re working for yourself, your mission still needs to be clear and concise.

Mike Rowe answered those questions briefly and accurately, and it allows people to know exactly what his brand is. Ford Motor Company and Lee Jeans obviously took notice and hired him for 7-figure paychecks because of it. he represents the rough, tough roll up your sleeves, blue-collar American and that’s exactly who those companies target as their buying audience.

Just like Mike Rowe represents a brand, so must you as a TV Host. If you “just want to be on TV,” or you “just want to be a host,” that’s simply not enough.

Today’s media culture is more complex, challenging and sought after by every Tom, Dick, and Harry than ever before. Many people believe that a spot or role on a popular reality show will be their ticket to riches and fame. 95% of them find out the hard way that it’s about so much more than that.

Let me ask you this; if one of the big networks called you today and said, “you’ve been cast for our new reality show and the only qualifying question we need you to answer is, “What is your mission statement?” Would you have a good answer?

Sure, we could all crank out some generic and lifeless statement in a few minutes, but would it truly be something you’re proud of and that could represent you well into the future?

It is that “why you do what you do” which has the ability to separate you from the masses.

Do you do what you do to help someone or something specific?

Do you do it because you’re really good at it?

Do you do it because it pays you good money?

The deeper the “why,” the better. When your “why” is deep, your passion for it automatically grows stronger.

Think about it this way. Many of us don’t know what we’re capable of until something or someone very special to us needs help. Maybe they are sick, or need financial help or some other life altering situation is threatening them. Suddenly, a new fire boils on the inside of us that gives us the ability to do things we didn’t know we had the capability to do before.

If you find that type of fire on the inside and unleash it to the world as your mission, you will separate your self from the pack and be well on your way to building a strong and unique brand. Because there is nothing more dangerous than someone with a deep burning passion.

Today, ask yourself these three questions:

Who am I?

Why do I do it?

Why does it matter?

When you know the answers, start beginning to craft them into a mission statement that you would be proud for the world to see.
