Kris Jenner wants a Kardashian Hosting Dynasty
Because it directly affects the hosting industry overall, I must use today’s blog to address the whole Kardashian “host takeover” press that I see all over the Internet recently.
If you’re not familiar with what I’m talking about, let me give you the cliff notes.
After Khloe Kardashian was announced as one of the co-hosts of The X Factor, a report surfaced claiming that Kris Jenner had stepped in after contract negotiations had come to a halt and made sure the deal got done. Now, according to Radar Online, Kris Jenner is “pushing hard” for Kourtney Kardashian and Kim Kardashian to get TV hosting gigs too! A “source close to the family” tells the Website, “With Khloe Kardashian getting her dream job as an X Factor host, Kris Jenner thinks anything is possible now, she believes that Kim Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian can benefit from Khloe’s luck and is desperate for them to go off on their own and appear in other shows. As soon as the contract was signed, Kris Jenner immediately got on the phone to various TV production companies to find out if there was something that Kim Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian could work on.”
As someone who knows this industry well, I must first say I understand where they are coming from. The Kardashian clan is undoubtedly a cash cow in many respects. However, when it comes to actually “hosting” a show, they’ve got a LONG way to go. Even if Kim and Kourtney do get shows, the only reason they would be popular is because we would all witness the country’s biggest train wreck unfold on TV week after week.
Kloe Kardashian on The X-Factor
Right now, we don’t even know how Khloe will do as one of the hosts on The X-Factor. In my opinion, her landing the gig is more a publicity stunt than anything. The 2011 Academy Awards were a great example of using big name celebrities with no hosting experience. To say the least Anne Hathaway and James Franco were a publicity stunt gone bad. I hate to see X-Factor taking the same path for ratings, but I’ll have to see it unfold live before I can honestly make any further comment.
As for hosting, let’s just remember what hosting is. It’s about many things, but two of the biggest are personality and charisma. Both of which I don’ feel the Kardashian clan have. What they do have are the flare for drama and the never ending need for attention. If those 2 attributes made a successful host, then the humongous lines at arenas for the the network talent show auditions would be full of great hosts, but unfortunately they are not.
So how did we get here?
The Kardashians do have one thing going for them and that is a tremendous brand. Over the past decade they have built the family name into a true ratings getter. Even on the Internet, the name “Kardashian” is one of the most searched terms on the web. This brand recognition has obviously filled the family with tremendous confidence, which is understandable. They have ventured into many different areas and been successful. Fashion, infomercials, TV etc. But what is different about hosting is that their looks won’t last long and they can’t just hire somebody to do the bulk of the work for them. Part of being a host is having the God given ability to do so.
Instead of Kris Jenner shopping her unproven daughters be given shows to host, I have another idea that would be a real ratings getter. If she thinks they have the ability to host on a network level, then let them prove it against the many seasoned hosts out there vying for the same jobs. There are tons of hosts who have been nickel and diming it to get jobs for years and have all the ability in the world; they just haven’t got their break yet.
So how does this sound for a show concept? The Kardashian clan takes on starving artist hosts for a chance to land the next big network reality hosting gig. It would be a pseudo “So you think you can host?” type show. I know I would be the first in line to watch, if not host the show myself.
On behalf of the whole host industry, I am laying down a direct challenge to the Kardashian clan and the producers who are considering hiring them. Let the folks in this business who have true talent and passion to do this have a shot at their dream, and let the Kardashian clan be part of it. If they can prove their worth, so be it. Until then, let the true hosts do what they do best.
Now let’s get it on!
